De los cuatro estados que ayer celebraron elecciones para presidente del GOP, en tres se impusieron candidatos insurrectos no vinculados al aparato del partido: en New Hampshire, Washington y Arizona.
(...) Radio talk show host and tea partier Kirby Wilbur ousted Washington GOP chair Luke Esser by almost a two-to-one margin, after arguing that Evergreen state Republicans should have fared better in 2010 given the national climate.
Wilbur defeated Esser 69 to 36, despite being opposed by Attorney General Robert McKenna, who is widely expected to run for governor in 2012. The vote was largely seen as an early test of McKenna's sway over party activists.
In New Hampshire, tea partier Jack Kimball defeated Cheshire County GOP chair Juliana Bergeron for the party's top post in the first in the nation presidential primary state. Kimball promised to mend fences from the divisive battle, but Bergeron would only say she hoped he would stay true to his word.
And in Arizona, tea party favorite Tom Morrissey won the GOP helm on the third ballot in one of the largest turnouts the party has seen for such a vote.
Morrissey's win is a setback for the GOP establishment -- including Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl -- which was backing Ron Carmichael.
(...) The exception to the rule Saturday was in Oregon. Former gubernatorial candidate Allen Alley was unanimously elected to chair the GOP there, and in his speech to committee members he said he wanted the state party to emulate Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie going forward. (...)
